Hoo boy, Subscribers! I can’t believe this one got past the team here at The ‘Stack (I.E.---me and editorial assistant Chad Jeppity). But boy, did we let a whopper of an error get past us!
Here’s the offender in question:
“LIVE FROM BRISBANE: Paddington Town Hall, 1977
Flip to Side Two, and we land at one of the most infamous gigs in Australian rock history: Paddington Town Hall, April 21, 1977. The Saints hadn’t yet made their way to London. They were still caged in Brisbane, still howling at the bars. That night, they shared the stage with Radio Birdman, whose banners and iconography loomed large over the venue like totems of underground order.”
Now, here’s how it should have read:
“LIVE FROM SYDNEY: Paddington Town Hall, 1977
Flip to Side Two, and we land at one of the most infamous gigs in Australian rock history: Paddington Town Hall, April 21, 1977. The Saints hadn’t yet made their way to London. They'd broken free of their Brisbane cage, now howling in Sydney's pubs. That night, they shared the stage with Radio Birdman, whose banners and iconography loomed large over the venue like totems of underground order.”
Yeah, that’s serious. And I knew the geography and the timeline, and somehow, it got past my gaze. And I apologize. As I was told by David Laing, my dear friend Down Under who caught this and brought it to my attention: “All good. I just know if you leave as is, every Australian fan who reads it will post 'Well, you got that wrong you Yankee bastard'. (If you were English you'd be a pommy bastard, if you were French you'd be a froggy bastard and if you were New Zealander you'd be a Kiwi bastard'...).”
It was corrected immediately at the website. This is mostly for the benefit of my subscribers, opening their email and reading the incorrect version. You, The Saints, and Australia deserved better—and I’m sorry for the slip.
